Established in 1903, the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge protects and provides habitat for migrating birds and endangered species. It is the first national wildlife refuge and consists of an area of over 5000 acres (2023 ha). Public facilities are available on the refuge offering recreational and educational opportunities including hiking and wildlife observation.
